HOUSE BILL 147

 

AN ACT TO PROVIDE STAGGERED TERMS OF FOUR YEARS FOR MEMBERS OF THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF BRUNSWICK COUNTY.

 

The General Assembly of North Carolina enacts:

 

Section 1. The Board of County Commissioners of Brunswick County shall consist of five members who shall serve for staggered terms as herein provided, and who shall be elected at large by the qualified voters of the County.  Their terms shall begin on the first Monday in December after their election.

Sec. 2. Beginning with the general election to be held in 1976, the two candidates receiving the highest number of votes shall be elected for terms of four years, and the three candidates receiving the next highest number of votes shall be elected for terms of two years. At the general election in 1978, and every two years thereafter, the two candidates receiving the highest number of votes shall be elected for a term of four years, and the candidate receiving the next highest number of votes shall be elected for a term of two years. Only one member of the County Board of Commissioners shall be elected from any one township of the County.

Sec. 3. Chapter 299, Public-Local Laws of 1933, and Chapter 773, Session Laws of 1959, are hereby repealed.

Sec. 4. This act shall become effective upon ratification.
