SENATE BILL 544

 

 

AN ACT RELATIVE TO THE TERM OF OFFICE OF SUPERINTENDENTS OF COUNTY AND CITY PUBLIC SCHOOLS.

 

The General Assembly of North Carolina do enact:

 

Section 1.  G.S. 115-39 (1966 Replacement Volume) is hereby amended by:

(a)        Inserting between the words "biennially" and "thereafter" in line 4 the words "or quadrennially".

(b)        Inserting between the words "two" and "years" in line 10 the words "or four".

(c)        Inserting a new sentence after the word "qualified" in line 11 to read as follows: "The superintendent shall be elected for a term of either two or four years, which term shall be in the discretion of the county board of education."

(d) Rewriting the last paragraph to read as follows: "In all city administrative units, the superintendent of schools shall be elected by the city board of education of such unit, to serve for a period of either two or four years, which term of office shall be within the discretion of the board; and the qualifications, provisions and approval shall be the same as for county superintendents. The election shall be held biennially or quadrennially, as the case may be, during the month of April."

Sec. 2.  All laws and clauses of laws in conflict with this Act are hereby repealed.

Sec. 3.  This Act shall be in full force and effect on and after its ratification.
